About the Tour

There are places you see in photographs and think: it can’t really look like that. The Lofoten Islands really do look like that. Majestic cliffs dropping straight into the sea, fjords that glow at golden hour, red fishermen’s cabins reflected in still water, snow-capped peaks, and - this one surprises almost everyone - turquoise beaches that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean. And then there are the northern lights. Lofoten is one of the best places on earth to photograph Aurora Borealis, and we’ll have multiple nights to hunt for them. This is a week of serious Arctic photography in one of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet. Come prepared for winter, come prepared for beauty, and bring extra memory cards.

Itinerary

Day 1 Day 1

We meet at Leknes Airport - I recommend the Oslo–Bodø–Leknes flight - and head straight to our hotel. The evening is reserved for a welcome dinner and getting to know each other. Tomorrow starts early.

Day 2 Day 2

Morning in Hamnøy - a small fishing village that stops people in their tracks. Surrounded by sea, fjords and mountains on all sides, it’s the kind of place that makes you understand why photographers keep coming back to Lofoten. After rest and lunch we visit Nusfjord, another beautifully preserved village tucked into a narrow harbor between towering fjord walls. Quiet, authentic, and endlessly photogenic.

Day 3 Day 3

Sunrise in Reine - the most iconic village in Lofoten and one of the most photographed places in the world. The reputation is entirely deserved. After a morning walk through the village we have lunch in a stylish café with views that make it hard to concentrate on the menu. Evening: northern lights hunt.

Day 4 Day 4

Morning shoot in the Sakrisøy area. There’s a short hike - 10 to 15 minutes uphill - but the views from the top justify every step. Bring crampons; the ice and snow can be unforgiving. In the evening we head to the legendary Skagsanden Beach, one of those rare locations where the patterns left by wind, water and weather on the sand are worth a wide-angle lens and a long exposure all by themselves.

Day 5 Day 5

Sunrise at a location we keep off the public itinerary - a “secret” spot that rewards those who make the effort. Then we move to the Leknes area, which offers several exceptional northern lights locations. In the afternoon, a visit to the famous football pitch surrounded by fjords and mountains - one of those only-in-Norway moments - followed by lunch in a cozy traditional restaurant. We meet sunset at Uttakleiv Beach, where the combination of sculptural rocks, open ocean and mountain backdrop makes it one of the finest photography locations on the islands. It also happens to be an outstanding spot for Aurora after dark.

Day 6 Day 6

Morning at one of the frozen lakes nestled between snow-covered peaks. This is a wide-angle day - we’re looking for ice textures to use as foreground elements, the kind of natural geometry that turns a landscape into a composition. After lunch, we head to the famous surfer beach, where - if the conditions cooperate - we’ll have another chance to photograph the northern lights with a dramatic coastline in the frame.

Day 7 Day 7

We explore the eastern fjords, visit Vareid Beach, and stop at a traditional fishing village where local souvenirs and gifts are worth the browse. The evening session is at Haukland Beach - white sand, mountain backdrop, and the kind of light that makes everything look considered.

Day 8 Day 8

Last morning on the islands. After breakfast we say our goodbyes to each other and to Lofoten. I recommend the Leknes–Bodø–Oslo routing for the journey home. Until next time!

Oleg Rest

Oleg Rest

My name is Oleg Rest, I am a professional landscape photographer and traveler. I was born in Kazakhstan, the land of steps and severe climate. Since early childhood I was dreaming of traveling. I first took camera in my hands at 6, when my parents rented a Zenit film camera during our holidays on the Black Sea coast. I enthusiastically took pictures of my parents, later with my father we developed films in our bathroom and dried them on a rope. Now I shoot with a modern camera Canon R5, but nature and photography still inspire me the most. I have been to such amazing places as Patagonia, Norway, Iceland, Tuscany, Namibia, Slovenia, China, Moravia, the Alps and the Lofotens, Myanmar, Czech Switzerland and I wish to share my impressions and delight with you! Life is full of beauty. This is my motto. I am not a fan of sophisticated and time-consuming processing of photos. The best shot for me is the one that needs minimal processing. My main principles in photography are: Interesting composition Beautiful light Minimum of processing Nowadays it is hard to find a location where no photographer has ever been, that is why even in popular places I try to find an unusual foreground which makes any shot look in a new light. I have won several landscape photography competitions. My photos are published by Canon Czech Republic, Canon Ukraine. I am an ambassador of Lucroit filter manufacturer (Spain), H&Y (Hong Kong), software company Skylum (Luminar, Aurora HDR software) and backpack manufacturer f-stop (USA).
